One time I was in a Chinese dumpling restaurant and this lady asked me to rate her child’s spoken Japanese
The number of monolingual English speakers who want a fucking cookie for learning how to say hello in another language!
(To be clear I am supportive of all types of language learning efforts but only English speakers expect to be praised for learning or attempting anything, often when they won’t afford the same grace to people learning English)
@skinnylatte yup. You're usually not doing anyone a favor by speaking their language badly if they already speak yours better. Them putting up with your poor communication is asking them to bear a burden. They might be happy to help you learn but by golly they're helping you. Not sure why that's not obvious to everyone.
