From the pine-covered forest floor, woody goblet-like structures sprout. Each fungus is smaller than the size of a pinky nail. The fungus bowl contains around 10 seed spores, which are fat rounded discs in shape. Water fills the bowls, almost completely covering the seeds. When a water drop strikes the bowl, the raindrop force causes the seeds to splash out, scattering them farther from the parent plant. No or little rain will keep the seeds closer to home. Water resources determine how wide-spread the fungus body becomes. This type of fungus is called bird's nest or small nest fungus. The scientific name is Nidulariaceae.
