@h yeah, i'm actually pretty excited about faircoin as a proof-of-concept for a cooperatively-governed blockchain. i'd like to see a meta-faircoin so communities can easily run their own ledgers, but in the meantime i wish faircoin the best.

@garbados I'm not very excited about Faircoin really, it's a one-size-fits-all idea, and people don't get to issue their own coin. It's put Faircoin at the centre, I think it makes more sense to bootstrap on a token-based system.

But like I said, at least they're educating people and hopefully transferring significant capital from the capitalist financial system into the coop economy. That can't be bad.

@popefucker proof-of-work doesn’t scale: it becomes costly and inefficient, unsuitable for communal use. i look forward to seeing how proof-of-stake and proof-of-cooperation work out, or models that use gossip protocols instead of blockchains to improve availability and efficiency. projects like the stellar consensus protocol make trust an opt-in act, rather than assuming like cryptocurrencies that math can preclude bad faith.

@garbados I see no reason to believe that proof of work can't be efficient. If you're not trying to create a currency with necessarily smooth resource generation you can just make the difficulty constant.

But yes, for resource tracking outside of currency it would be best to use something like a Web of trust to verify resource generation (new resources and transactions signed by "miners" and you trust that the resource exists because you trust the person who signed it)

ya, i like the intentional web of trust model. i've seen it more and more often lately. it feels like a kind of "caveat emptor" WONTFIX to the vuln called trust, and it feels entirely reasonable.
