just .gitignore me and my file-exclusionism...

Okay, what the heck am I doing wrong?

I've tried:

(3rd one is almost exactly an example from the official docs)

...and yet the folder named "local" is still being included in the commit.

Is this messed up or is it just my brain overlooking something blindingly obvious (yet again)...

Also, I would like to see step-through debugging of every configuration file. Do you think your associates could arrange that for me, Mister Morden.

Web server configuration question -- this has to do with stuff that happens at config time, i.e. when the server reads the config files. For Apache, this happens when you do service apache2 restart or apachectl configtest.

I would like to check for the existence of a file without actually including it. There should be an error identifying the file if it isn't found.

Does either Apache or Nginx support such a thing?

I wonder how many educators are on here.

There were thriving communities of educators on Tumblr and Twitter, but Tumblr's went to heck after moderated hashtags went away and Twitter is ... Twitter.

The fediverse has, but that's more of an instance for college/university level academics. I'd like to connect with other K-12 educators.

TIL: Ubuntu (or maybe Debian) keeps all of /etc/ in a local Git repository -- presumably so that it can merge changes from upstream without overwriting local changes.

Apparently everyone is ok with the fact that the supposedly-open C++ standard is behind a $175 paywall?

Submission for the second fedi MD mixtape are open!

Future mixtapes might have more defined themes (non-english songs, music from fedi artists…), but as I’m still trying to figure out organization, for now, anything goes! Feel free to submit any song you like using this form:

I’m looking to get 74 minutes of music on this disc! I’ll close the form when I get enough submissions.

Note that mutuals will get prioritized, stay tuned for when I announced the final playlist!

I have a feature in this month’s Physics World on the role of free-and-open-source software in physics research.

Do read it and let me know what you think!

Mexico Supreme Court decriminalizes abortion

Why can't I have super-cool dynamic graphical debugging screens where I solve complex problems by staring at the screen for half a second and then going tappity-tappity-tap -- like all the cool kids in the movies do?

(...and, having convinced me of my inadequacy, why isn't capitalism trying to sell me a cure for it that I can't really afford?)

open for an inspiring speech!

search features that don't give any hint as to what the rules are.

If I just enter a string, will it match everything that includes that string, or that starts with it, or only items that match it exactly? Do wildcards work, or will they be taken literally, and cause my search to never find anything?

Lookinatchu, ... :kestraglow:

Asking for support.

So, as you may know, I've been struggling with my student loan this summer.

I was considering setting up a GoFundMe, but I'm opting against that right now.

I've set up a £300 goal on ko-fi to help cover my costs of living, because it has cut into all my incomes significantly.

If you can afford to help me, feel free to drop by my Ko-fi. You can even set up recurring monthly support on there.

If you can't afford to help at this point in time, boosting helps just as much.

Is there a way that a large number of people could sign on as "accomplices" to anyone who helps provide abortion services in TX?

[end of day alarms start going off]

Dangit, they don't make days like they used to.
I swear, they used to last for hours...
