#tootcat EMAIL PROBLEM FIXED i think!
Installed Postfix on local server, reconfigured Mastodon to use that... and, oh yeah, you have to restart the SideKiq service, not just the web service.
I suppose this should have been obvious, but also nobody mentioned it ever.
And contrary to widespread belief, setting up Postfix is easy. <click>

Fortunately, I'm only *sending* email, so that's not an issue ^.^
My comment about Postfix is kind of snidely subtooting this comment on the help-ticket I filed:
"while rails does have support for bare sendmail commands, most users do not go this route, due to the complexities of setting up a mail server that will reliably and consistently deliver to major email providers." https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/7323
