@eryn Don't pay for the medical care. Just don't.
Why:
1. You can't be held liable for something given to you against your will (IANAL; going on principles here). No sale, no debt.
2. In my experience, medical debt tends to reduce over time if your income is basically zilch.
3. If you don't own real estate, or something comparably priced, they pretty much can't do anything to you except trash your credit rating.

@woozle that's kinda where I'm at.
The only real asset I have to my name is my car, which...I highly doubt has any traditional/capitalist value anymore, with the modifications I've made.
I also can't *not* try to get ahead of this.
My heavyweight financial backers are...reconfirming their offers, but it's a slow process.
The next step involves getting my family to be kind, and that...is difficult.
And, nobody else gets the high level plan enough, yet.
