More accurately (and inclusively), I should say it's bad for *everyone* including cis men.

“Traditional masculinity ideology has been shown to limit males’ psychological development, constrain their behavior, result in gender role strain and gender role conflict and negatively influence mental health and physical health.”

@ruby Maybe it's just be, but #ToxicMasculinity" always seemed like a misnomer to me, considering what it means. Isn't there a more neutral term?

@zge No, it's not meant to be neutral. Toxic masculinity is a distinct and separate thing from *masculinity*, which can be healthy and normal.

@ruby I know that, but that's exactly the interpretation that people tend not to have, due to the term.

And if the wager is between having a useful concept that isn't easily misunderstood/misappropriated vs a specific label, I think I know which makes more sense to stand behind.

@zge Feel free to use whatever language you prefer when you are out doing the work of getting men to not act like dicks.

@ruby That was my point, I'd like to use another word, but I didn't know of another term.

@ruby as someone who was repeatedly told that "boys don't cry" and to "be a man" as a kid, I consider myself to be very lucky that I was able to divorce myself from these toxic axioms of dread and actually be a decent human being as an adult.

Too bad that the damage this ideology did in childhood had already been done. I'm still paying for it today even though I've un-learned the most egregious things which accompanied it.
