@polymerwitch @maloki What's the reason for using XMPP for private communication instead of ActivityPub? ActivityPub is private by default, protocol-wise... Mastodon is public by default in its usage, but the standard isn't (it uses email-like addressing)

@cwebber @maloki XMPP is used for realtime push and both e2e and more granularity on what is visible in those separate outboxes. This can all be done on an ActivityPub outbox, but it would take engineering a bunch of solutions (OMEMO, visibility on virtual outboxes, etc) that come pre-baked with XMPP. This is more an implementation specification for an ActivityPub connected project than a whole new specification

@polymerwitch @maloki There's been interest in adding E2E with ActivityPub... it seems to me that it's less work to do that probably, though it would require also using activitypub's client to server api instead of mastodon's

@cwebber @polymerwitch @maloki regarding a possible end-to-end encryption extension for activitypub: it appears there is someone from the gnupg community working on that, and i have _no_ confidence whatsoever in this community to come up with anything that is helpful for people who are not apex-privileged.

if there are other efforts, i would be very interested in reading up on them, though!
