We are now ready to switch over all of our ~500 projects! Kudos to the gitlab team for the big effort on bringing this to CE and the help and quick action on GNOME needs. https://about.gitlab.com

Right now, #Conservancy's bkuhn is verifying donations for credit to our match. Spoiler alert: we're close; a few more donations today will take us over the top! Last chance to take advantage of the generous match from PIA & Anonymous

I just went around and did some basic nmap-ing on the most popular Mastodon instances, and there's some seriously sketchy stuff in there. Publicly reachable Postgres servers, tons of open internal HTTP ports, SSH with password login, multiple Mastodon instances that seem to be running on mail server VMs, …

I guess if you're just running a single-user instance for yourself, sure, but those are all 2000+ user instances.

My dear friend @way created tooter.today/ to help people pick a Mastodon instance that suits them!

technical note about this tech as I see some confusion/misconceptions:

Admins of your instance have complete control over your account. Really, we can read all the posts (including DMs) and we can even impersonate/hack your account with ease.

Make sure you trust your admins.

Here on toot.cat we have a CoC that applies to both admins and non admins. Admins are expected to abide by the CoC and not oppress users as well.
