on the one hand: content warnings are necessary for people to engage with difficult, painful topics healthily

on the other: not posting things that need content warnings like that / not wanting to see said things is Very Bad.

there's a reason i invented / suggested content warnings back then, and it's precisely because I CANNOT ENGAGE with such difficult topics without the layer of content warnings

I'm sad that Mastodon seems to be getting more and more passive-aggressive and mean-spiritedly cliquish as time goes on. It's starting to feel like the worst of Tumblr culture in a lot of ways. Over the last few days I've pre-emptively muted notifications for several posts because I can predict the replies I'm going to get and I'd rather not see them.

I don't think it has to be that way. I think we can all do better. Exercise compassion for others, and maybe think twice about our next subtoots.

Really, asking "what should replace Facebook" is putting things the wrong way around.

A more interesting way to ask the question is, "what did Facebook replace."

People used to build their own websites. People used to have blogs. People used USENET which was truly distributed and un-censorable.

Facebook and Google took the open internet and open standards and monetized and made everything crappy. Enough of that. Nothing should replace Facebook, it's done, stick a fork in it.
