@hax I think that includes more than just his inbox, and it includes folders mailing lists go to, but ugh. I understand my general inbox zero is equally freaky but I don't understand. Years ago when my inbox started looking like that, I unsubscribed from about 20 mailing lists.

@georgieboy ouch. I generally can get zero with archiving ones to keep.

@hax My workflow, if I'm not overwhelmed, is: reply immediately if I can; if I can't, try to get it later that same day. If it's informational-only, it goes to archives. If I don't care (and that's a lot), I delete. One important mailing list goes right to my inbox, three more go to subfolders that I look at when I think about it / get the chance. If it's a longer work item, it goes into request tracking.

@hax My experience, both personal and observational (and this isn't universal, so totally not throwing shade) is that # of filters usually increases as response time to actually important emails / messages does.

I had a co-worker who was very proud of his extremely efficient system where he had a filter for anybody who sent him email more than once. He showed me and I saw each folder had 60, 120, 34, 232 unread emails.

@hax The people he supported usually learned pretty quickly the best way to get him to respond was to send the email, then go to his office and ask him if he'd seen it yet. He'd go to your folder, read it, and then immediately drop what he was doing to help out. Sort of the opposite of efficiency and ngl part of the reason I left that job is the other thing they learned is to ask me first and I'd help out as soon as I could.
