riddle me this, batman: what the fuck is hyperliberal about portland? is it the communities of color the city has systematically terrorized, dismantled, paved, and gentrified? is it the mere presence of obviously queer people? our cops are brutal racists and our government cares just about not at all about the unhoused and the unwell.
i feel like characterizing portland as hyperliberal emerges from and appeals only to the gentrifier’s own imagined enlightenment.
any time i see it said, hyperliberal portland, i just feel like, who the fuck are you?
or maybe hyperliberalism is precisely what i’m getting at: that self-conscious characterization of superficial quirks as being inherently progressive or politically subversive.
there is nothing subversive about raising rents and crowding people out so you can have goat cheese ice cream, lord help me
@garbados I ran afoul of an actual skinhead on damnportlanders as well as just your garden variety edgy Libertarian and the expected ragefests because someone saw a homeless guy wearing what appeared to be new shoes. Also lots of people who cooed and gurgled over Obama's murder of a teenager and his dad.
It's why I roll my eyes whenever I hear the phrase "Trump's America" in response to some more recent outrage.
@garbados Namely: US "centrists" who would rather punch left and aid fascists before the prospect of any genuine semblance of social justice with human rights for every single human being without exception. Just a different flavour of white supremacy.
@garbados I think it is, in fact, the mere presence of obviously queer people.
@garbados I think "hyperliberal" just means "makes conservatives extremely uncomfortable", and that bar is low.
re: “hyperliberal” pdx
me: *is queer in the daylight*
conservative: this is SOCIALISM
me: not yet it isn't
@garbados it has vegans
