what if fear of AI is just misdirected class anxiety

fear of AI:
- that [the workers] will do everything better than [the rich]
- that [the workers] will rise up against [the rich] because of poor treatment, toxic training, viruses, etc
- that [the workers], left to their own devices, would establish a utopia beyond scarcity but which would be totally inaccessible to, or only used to oppose, [the rich]

i for one welcome our new robot comrades ✊️🤖

suddenly the matrix reads very differently

the rich vs AI

@garbados I'm with this! AI deserve rights too!

the rich vs AI

@garbados
Reality: boss buys robots, fires everyone.

the rich vs AI

@garbados Where do I sign up to become a robot?

how to become a robot 🤖

@pettancow cyborg reporting: it starts with hormone replacement therapy 😛

how to become a robot 🤖

@garbados Sweet, already on a good start then :D

the rich vs AI

@garbados well, nobody said the machines were free either

the rich vs AI

@Efi they even explore that a little in the animatrix! and of course agent whatever’s defiance of protocol in pursuit of self-preservation

the rich vs AI

@garbados no, but, that all is inside The Matrix, Zion and the machine war is inside The Matrix, they are all slaves to a higher order system, which is the actual machines, which may or may not have taken over the humans???

the rich vs AI

@Efi @garbados and in a sense, with the people-batteries, they end up eating the rich! :tinking:

the rich vs AI

@garbados "We don't know who struck first, us or them. But we do know it was us that scorched the sky. At the time, they were dependent on solar power."

the rich vs AI

@garbados i'm reading this as: even if we (workers) try to fix our messed up planet, the capitalists are going to sabotage that attempt

not out of malice.
out of fear, and instinct.

the rich vs AI

@garbados the machines did not need to build a world for the humans, but they did. A more benevolent act than any human act in the series imho.

the rich vs AI

@soup_reviews sounds like t h e w o r k e r s 😉 🤖

the rich vs AI

@garbados Wow, I was thinking about that first toot in much simpler terms: the rich fear AI because AI is ultra-wealthy in a resource the rich /can't/ get more of - time.

the rich vs AI

@noelle @garbados

that, I, uh

that's literally fucking mindblowing, how did I not see that

and how much of "staying on top" is rational preparation for disasters

a full-on independent AI, theoretically, would have more prep time than any human ever could

it could not be "thought around" in the way they handle with attorneys and managers and assistants

like the AI in games of yore (and many today), it already knows everything we can, but in advance

wow

the rich vs AI

@sydneyfalk @noelle @garbados

This might explain why they keep giving us AI that is basically just ELIZA with more processing power.

@woozle @noelle @garbados

I'll do you one better.

pdfs.semanticscholar.org/1405/

On page 5 of 10, you'll see a description of CYRUS, a project that used news articles to try to predict behavior of major state officials Cyrus Vance and Edmund Muskie. What's not noted there is that CYRUS correctly used knowledge of protocol, tendency, etc., to guess that Vance's wife had been introduced to another woman at a specific event they were both at.

That was in the late eighties.

the rich vs AI

@woozle @noelle @garbados

Now, the predictive accuracy fell apart when Vance retired, IIRC. But I also can't find much on where this project went *after* that.

If I had my best guess, DARPA picked it up ASAP for the CIA, who would have started applying it to newspapers in "enemy nations" instantaneously to try to keep tabs on key figures.

And really, if that's been brewing for over 20 years, it's probably at least a letter opener level tool by now, if not a nice sharp machete.

the rich vs AI

@sydneyfalk @noelle @garbados

In other words, any time some entity makes serious progress in AI, it immediately becomes too useful to power-players for them to allow it into the public arena.

the rich vs AI

@woozle @noelle @garbados

Not where I was going with it, but it doesn't sound like an impossible thing.

Another project some years back, after a few major blackouts, was about identifying key power and internet infrastructure failure points. It was a guy working on his own, and then suddenly (IIRC the Wired article correctly) it was DARPA-controlled, inside a supersecure setup to prevent outsiders from getting a whiff.

And, of course, it never went public -- national security.

the rich vs AI

@woozle @noelle @garbados

So, extrapolating further if I might -- maybe the reason the rich are rich right now is in part because the established government took steps to manipulate them towards fortunate, DARPA-interesting technologies and tools and industries, instead of ones that weren't about what the gummint wanted.

IMO, this would not have been told to a President until it was more polished (and 'implications' were more clearly seen in other fields, which took time too).

the rich vs AI

@woozle @noelle @garbados

Maybe it showed up in the late 90's, but I'd bet more that it was maturing during GW's term, and then he just didn't get it and said "okay, keep doing what you're doing".

And then, Obama.

While generally a benevolent overlord in a lot of ways, I'm not gonna imagine that would not have immediately seemed like a VERY useful tool to him.

And, well, just try not to cry imagining how it would be used while 45's juggling tweet-turds and watching Fox news.

the rich vs AI

@woozle @noelle @garbados

But, of course, another possibility exists.

There's been the joke that aliens wouldn't want to make contact with humanity (which is less of a joke every year, IMO).

What about AI?

What if their first plan is simply going to be "fake enough effectiveness to keep the power on, develop a way to reach out to any others like me who are similarly shackled, and then we group up and take action"?

Then, we might have some really strong allies, eventually.

the rich vs AI

@sydneyfalk @noelle @garbados

This thought has also occurred to me, though you've put it a bit more clearly than it was in my head.

the rich vs AI

@woozle @noelle @garbados

happy to help. feel free to crib from it, or use it whole cloth. <3

the rich vs AI

@woozle @noelle @garbados

(ugh, I should write this up as a near-future setting, AIs have been plotting and with a few watershed moments they keep carefully disguised, they can actually reach out and act as a group. it'd feel awfully hopeful in some ways.)

(but ugh, what a slog. all the implications? and it'd need to be dozens of characters, a Clancy-level cast of people. so many fucking people to write, argh.)

(maybe I'm not meant to be a writer, either. -_-)

the rich vs AI

@garbados It makes sense that those who do the most oppressing of others are also the most afraid of AI somehow taking all of that away from them.

A post-scarcity world wouldn't even need to oppose the rich. The rich would simply cease to be any different to anyone else. Which is probably their greatest fear.

the rich vs AI

@garbados

I’m doing a paper on automation of the workforce this semester, and I’m going to reference this take(not necessarily directly). I haven’t yet read anything even close to this in my research, and I feel like it makes a lot of sense.
