@garbados I guess what it's really about is that "censorship" is equated with "criticism". being "uncensored" means being able to do whatever the fuck and not getting anything other than approval for it. Anita Sarkeesian was "censoring" games by reviewing them

@garbados I just checked three dictionaries and yup, the word doesn’t apply to CWs. What dictionary does he use? Merriam-Webster’s For Assholes?

As for CWs, I think use them if you like. Or not. Putting them on everything seems a bit excessive to me imho. The media is the message after all, and creating a culture where normal, healthy things have a warning seems to me unhealthy.

@garbados I think it is good to use a CW for a topic that could cause someone trauma. But I also think it is good to understand the difference between trauma and discomfort.

@rotatingskull that delineation can’t be made on the audience’s behalf, which brings up the shortcoming of CWs as they exist now: folks largely can’t apply such metadata to incoming content so they have to rely on other users to apply tags pre-emptively. we should be able to do it proactively, such as by setting up rules and filters, so that folks can have a chance to make that delineation for themselves.

@garbados I think this is an interesting idea but I’d like to see it implimented before I have an opinion on it.

This is an old debate regarding push/pull media. When you choose push media, I think inevitably you’re inviting some degree of unpredictability. That is the nature of it.

obviously there’s no perfect methodology for CWs that accommodates everyone always but using this field for additional metadata, whether about subject or topics or just the setup to a joke, is i think very useful and important to this medium. it’s really helpful to me personally when things to which i’m sensitive have been tagged.
