back on broadway for yet another sold-out run:

act 1: a tool solves a problem
act 2: tool becomes well-known
act 3: dev sells tool
act 4: tool's new owners modify the software to spy on you

act 5: "there has been a security breach. give us more money to receive alerts in the future when we lose your data again"

jeez why does this keep happening? it’s almost like profit-driven changes in ownership and development represent a fundamental vulnerability for tools and their communities 🤔

@garbados

I almost managed to say something that eloquent but botched it and gave up

and yours is way better so I'm just gonna ride that train and point at what you said and say "yes this"

death of a service

@garbados I just read it as "Death as a Service"

death of a service

@garbados My hunch is that it possibly has to do with financialisation of the technology industries falling prey of the same predators that ruined other industries before.

@garbados FUCK SHIT HECK I USE STYLISH

death of a service

@theoutrider @er1n @garbados y'all, how's this different from using uBlock?

death of a service

@hirojin @er1n @garbados Stylish/Stylus is a completely different extension for a completely different purpose than adblock/ublock

there just also happen to be stylesheets that hide ads on eg Facebook

death of a service

@hirojin @er1n @garbados Stylish, for example, allows for dark themes on sites that don't support them normally

@theoutrider @er1n @garbados ack

i've used uBlock to remove elements from, e.g. GitHub that i don't want (the scoreboard or whatever that thing is called)

but i never thought of doing that…
if i can't read a site, and Firefox Readability / Pocket doesn't help, i ditch it.

@garbados i switched to the stylus extension a few months ago and I'm glad i did
