trump is a symptom, not an anomaly. the US has a long and continuing history of slavery and genocide that it has never seriously confronted. it underpins our governing institutions, who love their power but hate thinking about how they got it. they have never put in the work to evict fascism. rather they have fostered it when useful and downplayed it when embarrassing. faced with their legacy in broad daylight, even the elected opposition cannot bring itself to oppose fascism.

@garbados this is true for many countries
and most had to go thru revolutions or (civil) wars or other kinds of bloodshed before being able to _actually_ face their legacy and fundamentally change their constitutions
