PSA: please do not use "religion" when you mean Christianity, abortion

Attempting to get ahead of the inevitable backlash: US abortion bans are not an expression of *religious* freedom. They are an expression of certain *Christian* views.

In Judaism, there are many cases where abortion is halachically mandated: jta.org/2019/05/22/opinion/wha (a good overview from an Orthodox perspective) Banning abortion infringes upon Jewish religious freedom, so please don't say "religion" when you mean Christian.

snark, religion

Just because it's the only religion you know doesn't mean it's the only religion that exists, _Karen_ 🙄

@ehashman seems like there is a 1st amendment challenge to those laws as well

@ehashman Satanism dictates the individual's bodily autonomy is inalienable. Denying somebody the right to an abortion is the same as forcing them to carry a pregnancy, which is a violation of Satanist's religious freedoms as well.

@ehashman 👏👏👏

@ehashman using religious freedom is also problematic when christian values are showed onto agnostics, atheists etc.

@ehashman and it's only something that evangelicals rallied around when their previous political project (preserving segregated schools) got too toxic to profess publicly. This deeply held religious conviction is younger than a lot of the pastors pushing it

re: PSA: please do not use "religion" when you mean Christianity, abortion

@robotcarsley YUP. I always thought it was a bit weird that this was a deeply entrenched Catholic position that was generally rejected by Protestants until the 70s when it became a cause to unify behind.

re: PSA: please do not use "religion" when you mean Christianity, abortion

@ehashman it's always a bad time when the fundamentalist wackos of two incompatible religions find common ground, because it's inevitably in service of making things worse for the rest of us. Like the evangelicals aligning with hardcore Zionists in order to hurry their rapture prophecy, or Pat Robertson saying that Wahabbists were right to do 9/11 because we're a bunch of sickos

re: PSA: please do not use "religion" when you mean Christianity, abortion

@ehashman It's very worth mentioning that there are many other religions that condemn abortion besides the christian sects that do.

But this isn't about religious (or christian) freedom regardless, because as long as abortion isn't banned, everyone is free to decide whether or not abortion is right for them and take their own religious views into account. It's none of their fucking business what other people do. It doesn't impact them.

IMO as long as folks aren't forced to get or not get abortions, we're all gucci as far as religious freedom is concerned.

@ehashman I think that the main issue here is patriarchy, not this or that specific belief system.

@ehashman thanks a lot for sharing. i really appreciate this insight into the topic <3

@ehashman Thank you for bringing this up! I don't see this discussed much outside of Jewish circles. Christianity is not the end-all-be-all of religion!

@ehashman did anybody call banning abortions a "religious freedom"?? seems more like a religious oppression

@ehashman that was very interesting
