Cases going up substantially 😫 7-day average of daily new cases is up almost *70%* from two weeks ago. Goddamn it

@ehashman yeah, I was staring at it in disbelief, too. All of that despite a decent percentage of vaccinated people. Turns out, not enough :-(

@isagalaev delta variant is wreaking havoc, and these fucking public health buffoons told people to stop wearing masks 🤦‍♀️

@ehashman but vaccines seems to cover that too, last I heard, so not wearing masks looks okay to me. It's just this sudden reversal of trends in the last one or two weeks that I can't explain. My best guess is that it's more contagious by enough rate to make the remaining unvaccinated population to spread it efficiently.

@isagalaev vaccines will help protect against death and hospitalization, but not getting sick.

@isagalaev or, rather, I should add: they *DO* protect from getting sick, too, but not as much against the original strains, and there are enough people for decent case breakthrough.

It is also true that the vast majority of people who are getting hospitalized are unvaccinated. It is also true the majority of those people are low-income and many of them have been struggling to access vaccines. A tragedy.

@ehashman one of my friends cited inability to get away from work for a few days as the reason for not vaccinating. Not sure if that's the only reason (he used to downplay the threat, too).
