Mastodon idea: filter by Content Warning

for example: all "gore" could be hidden while all "trans medical" could be shown by default on a per user setting level

@polymerwitch In some ways I think at this point if you tag everything with CW, it's actually general tagging. And that may not be bad: tag based filtering may be what people want.

Of course, some tags are much more mundane than others. It's hard to get upset about peanut butter. (Okay, I'm sure someone's taking that as a challenge...)

Basically, for some of the "stronger" tags, you could make it required on an instance to tag those categories. (That's going to break across federation tho?)

@cwebber @polymerwitch I'm not on Mastodon and so I don't deal with CWs. In the Culture War over CWs my opinion is to keep the warnings to a barest possible minimum. Things like NSFW, but not much more than that. Elaborate tagging schemes mean you need to agree on some ontology, and having sections of what you're writing concealed by default from the reader may not be great if you're trying communicate in an open and honest way.

If I had to conceal "politics" under a tag then probably 80% of everything I say would be effectively censored by default in that kind of CW system.

@bob @polymerwitch I agree that 80% of the stuff I might have to say might be filtered (though, if it's filtering in the hands of users, it's not censorship! and I think that's the ideal direction)
