discord is a corporation
the developer of discord.py is formally deprecating the project, and the only path forward would be for someone else to make a different version under a new name.
essentially, they've been in a constant battle with Discord staff and had their requests completely ignored, and with the latest changes to the API, they have lost all motivation to work on the project. because no one else they trust was able to take over ownership, they're shutting it down.
they made a big post on GitHub about it if you want to read the full story. it's a mess: https://gist.github.com/Rapptz/4a2f62751b9600a31a0d3c78100287f1
from what it seems, there's a good chance that a lot of major Discord bots will not work when the deadline in April 2022 comes by and Discord wants all the bots to switch to the new API. and there's not much you can really do about it
discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey What's also "fun" is that if I'm reading correctly, this'll make bots like mine which attempt to appear more human by using phrases rather than commands impossible entirely, along with chatbots, currency/unit converters, and, well anything that needs to react to arbitrary text
discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey how is deprecating API related to corporation? Idk what is their goal in this case but it just… happens.
I'm asking in good faith 💚
re: discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey Did people learn nothing from Twitter when they did the same thing? Or pretty much all other proprietary social media services?
I have been burned on this more than once, and I have no plans to integrate with any other proprietary system unless someone is willing to pay me good money for it.
re: discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey I wonder if this will be the fall of https://github.com/sm00th/bitlbee-discord and related services . If so, well, there goes my ability to easily communicate with folks.
discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey goddamn. gotta move to matrix a bit faster
discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey Such discord
discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey Interesting the parallels with Twitter’s API and how they screwed developers too. Almost as if venture-capital-funded correlations are asshole or something.
discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey * corporations
discord is a corporation

Sure there is: leave Discord. There are alternatives, and some do *not* view the user as a datapoint to milked.
discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey Time to switch to Matrix. You can even bridge existing Discord rooms for seamless migration https://t2bot.io/discord/ #matrix #discord
discord is a corporation
@clarfonthey and thus continues discord making terrible decisions that will slowly push everyone off the platform
