Offering code of conduct assistance

I’m thinking about offering a flat-rate code of conduct consultation again. I’d spend about an hour to read your policies and create a report with my recommendations, and a 30 min call to discuss. Any open source projects or user groups who might be interested?

@audrey Possibly us here at social.coop!

@nev What's a good way to get in touch?

Offering code of conduct assistance

@audrey I'll make a post on the sub-forum we have (for the committee dealing with this). How much would you charge?

Offering code of conduct assistance

@nev $200 would be in line with my usual consulting

Offering code of conduct assistance

@audrey k, thanks! Am on the go right now but will post to the group when I'm back at my computer

@audrey Why is a "code of conduct" needed? If people are behaving unethically, don't accept their pull request? 🤔

@marknoble @audrey Codes of Conduct are like contracts. You make contracts before there's trouble so that when things *do* go wrong there's clearly defined rules and actions to take. Without them, it's ridiculously for things to spiral out of control.

@audrey @jamey FYI there's ongoing discussion about code of conduct in the OpenStreetMap community. (yes the fact that it a discussion now is.. 😔) It's complicated.

Offering code of conduct assistance

@ebel @jamey I heard that the State of the Map folks are getting a consultant to work on the CoC for the event, so maybe that will benefit the general discussion?

Offering code of conduct assistance

@audrey @jamey SotM (and various regional cons) has had a CoC for years. Dunno how good it is, a consultation can't hurt I suppose. 🙂

Offering code of conduct assistance

@audrey please do not take this the wrong way but is it really so hard to create a reasonable CoC? (note that I've never tried to write one myself so it's very easy to say that sitting here in my comfortable armchair :D)

@neomorph A lot of groups can do fine by using a standard CoC and creating their own enforcement plan using resources like safetyfirstpdx.org. But — in practice, I’ve found a ton of CoCs that are confusing or unwise. Also, groups may want something that reflects specific values or goals beyond what’s in the template.

@audrey Thank you so much for the reply, really enlightening for someone like me who knows nothing or very little about these matters. thanks for taking the time to explain :)

Offering code of conduct assistance

@neomorph @audrey if you are serious about it, it is a lot of work. even if you take one off-the-shelf, you still need to figure out what its words mean to _you_.

also: who feels responsible for its implementation!

Offering code of conduct assistance

@tethre @audrey yeah, I have to say that is a good point. maybe these things are in fact waaay harder than I previously imagined haha

@audrey
I might be. I started @calendar_social a month ago with the Contributors Covenant, but it would be great to fine tune it. It already got some attention, but I donʼt know yet if it becomes successful at all; still, it would feel better to talk about it.

Offering code of conduct assistance

@gergely @calendar_social Cool, what’s the best way to get in touch?

Offering code of conduct assistance

@audrey
I have honestly no idea ☺ I never did anything similar before. I prefer something real-time, either talk or chat. I have Matrix and I plan to fire up an XMPP server soon; I prefer these over commercial platforms, but I donʼt mind Skype or Hangouts.

But first, this whole thing is on my budget; so before we proceed, can I know your rates?
