So, how do people run their own personal #fediverse instances? What software? Self-hosted or paying for hosting?

To do my part in ensuring the fediverse stays diverse, I think I'd rather not use mastodon. Also, I'd rather not run that kind of bloat on my small homelab when selfhosting

@yarmo I've heard quite some good words about , both in features and relatively low resource usage.

@FiXato @yarmo Yesterday I managed to get a #gotosocial instance running on my Raspberry Pi at home, and created a user there as and can toot using the Tusky Mastodon app -- but the instance does not seem to be federating properly. More investigations needed!

@eob @FiXato I had a quick peek at your instance: it's not federating because you're not yet following or being followed by anyone. Once you are, your posts will federate :)

@eob You have to follow a few people. Then that works too ... :) @FiXato @yarmo

@b30 it seems there's more to it. I am experimenting with a #gotosocial instance, am following someone on an instance but my federated timeline does not get filled with posts from said instance.

@eob @FiXato

@yarmo Things are going pretty well here with #GoToSocial and the federated timeline. »federating with 45 other instances« But hey, still alpha ;) @eob @FiXato
